Produced by Stuart Scott, you might have seen this around? Many archival surfing photographs from people like Bob Weeks, Bruce Usher and Mal Sutherland, we have to say, we really enjoyed this magazine, which is more like a book with a soft cover. There was only 1000 made and it was always underground...you can find it today on ebay australia, or you can email Stuart directly at noosa_surfingthe60s@yahoo.com.au
The third film from the Californian artist who has helped sew the seeds of change that have recently sprouted to the present day.
His third film. 'The Present' is showing in California in a few weeks and we are sure that it will be in Australia later this year. Hopefuly there will be few shows up and down the East Coast. The film has been years in the making, and it is coming soon for our enjoyment.
Dick Hoole rang us yesterday, frothing about this new title...and so he should be. Bob Evans is not alive and there is nobody actively working on his legacy and out comes this wonderful movie, on DVD...thanks to the work of Warren Delbridge.
We watched the film last night, it goes for about an hour, and has some excellent footage from the 1960's from a 13 year old Midget Farrelly and teenage Nat Young to 5 years later when they became the competitive surfing champions....this film represents the peak of surfing from that era, films with a budget, and includes plenty of travel to Hawaii, sometimes Bob took up to 5 surfers with him....Peru and San Diego World titles are covered.....they travel from Torquay in Australia right up to Double Island North of Noosa...there is footage of Greenough, on the trip to Noosa. Nice footage of Lennox too....Drouyn gets the gig, but the waves are small mostly when Drouyn is on the surfari, except for a few waves in Hawaii where he is famous for his charging. John Peck, aged about 20 and the classic smoking wave sequence....too many surfers to list.
The soundtrack is brilliant! i want a copy and will do my best to track it down and get a dozen copies for people who like this old music....please let me know if you are interested.
For now, we are posting this title, via Dick Hoole, anywhere in OZ for $40 including express bag 500 gram postage. We can fit 4- 5 dvds in a 500 gram express postage and people who like this new title might also be interested in 'fantastic plastic machine (circa67) the inner most limits of pure fun (circa 69) or the new packaged morning of the earth.....do let us know, as the post christmas deals are too good.

The dvd to this film will be available soon, and we will try and remember to let you know where and when....for now, the soundtrack is available through Ubiquity records.

It is snowing in england, roads and transport systems are down, but that is not stopping Daniel from posting stuff and creating new printed zines on his 'rich tapestry' internet space....recently uploaded some artwork from Neil, who is featured in this image by Mark Leary...Neil is a fantastic surfer and inspiration to many surfers in Cornwall.
the surf
Yes everyone knows about it, the surf has been pumping in Australia. please remember to tell everyone that there has also been unprecedented violence, fights and injuries from the pointed nose surfboards and dysfunctional fin systems spotted at many of the more popular spots. learner surfers have been spotted tracking out on straight railed fish outlines and running into grandmas who were supposed to be having their leisurely morning swim. While the waves have been pumping, the crowds have been thumping and school holidays have brought with it, children with angry faces that look confused when you tell them to *&

switch-foot book TWO
Contributions for the second switch-foot book are finalised, and soon we can expect to see another coffee table brick loaded with wonderful content from people from around the World, diligently compiled by Andrew Crockett over the last 3 years, he still doesnt know what he will call the book....any suggestions? the switch-foot website is soon to be re-loaded with all the new material, interviews, videos and lots more....so stay tuned....while the corporate side of the World is dying and being bailed out with more debt, the roots remain strong and growing.
We recently added loads of new images into the banner of switch-foot website and a new section under 'people' called short films...soon the website will be uploaded with loads of new content from the second book, interview transcipts and all kinds of other stuff we have lying around...including material from 'the classic surf company'...
They were set to tour India in Jan 2009, but the Australian government cancelled their plans, due to the violence in India in December 2008. The band is working on an album with Jalli Buba Kuyateh and we have recently been listening to the 7 track demo and it is fat! jali is also set to release a solo album this year, from the same recording sessions...The band still has a few recording sessions to finish the album and have a few radio friendly versions flowing on the airwaves. Stay tuned and good luck to the Afro boys to get back to India for the roots tour in 2010.
sharky waters in Australia
Since new laws have been introduced in the 'marine park sanctuary zones' sharks are having a lot of fun. It is illegal to catch and kill even a shark that has been terrorising swimmers or surfers, so looks like the problem is here to stay for a while. This newspaper clipping was front page after the recent shark attack at Fingal Headland, one of the most notorious shark hang outs on the East Coast of OZ.
Tom Wegener has recently won 'shaper of the year' in the US. Five years ago when Tom and Jacob Stuth were experimenting with finless timber old style boards, people were writing them off as being delusional.....today, it is the very board, the alaia, modelled off the traditional Hawaiian shapes from hundreds of years ago, that has won Tom Wegener much praise and no doubt contributed to the award...what does this tell us? It tells me that if you are looking at someone at the beach and wondering what the hell they are doing on that board, then that board probably goes. Whatever your aquatic transportation device, Wegener has probably tried it and probably makes it.
Barrie Sutherlands new website is loaded with wonderful images from the old days right up to today...he still shoots black and white film and has a gallery in Torquay Victoria.
Bobby Brown by Bob Weeks
Bob took this photo and others of the late Bobby Brown, in the 1960's. Bobby Brown was the stylemaster of his day, whose life was tradgically cut short in a bar fight in the late 1960's...Weeks has been experimenting with printing on archival cotton, to create a print that will stand the test of time. The prints are mounted with no adhesive, signed and available. If you are interested, email bob at photo@midcoast.com.au. Prices start at $200 and go upwards
