Peter Troy~~~the original surf explorer
To anyone that knew Peter Troy personally, his sudden death from a blood clot in the last week of September will have a lasting impact. Peter was a giving man, who gave and gave and surfing was lucky to have his input through the surf life saving association, heritage museums and the Hall Of Fame...but it goes a lot deeper than that. Peter Troy is a 'tribal elder' of the highest order within Australia surfing history, and his important message will be featured in the sequel to the switch-foot book...stay tuned.
Brocky is a legend. This photo is an old board AC took round to show Brocky one winters morning last year, and yes, they shared nice waves out the front of his house.. Brocky is a wonderful surfer, and shaper of surfboards. He has been shaping them all of his life, and continues to make terrific surfboards. His shaping is Influenced by George Greenough, Michael Cundith and Geoff McCoy to name a few. Brockys shapes are futuristic in many ways, and if you want to get in touch with him, you can....email joybythesea@hotmail.com
Brockys boards have all the best elements of flow dynamics accured over the last 40 years, anyone who has seen Mick Waters film, "Believe' will have noticed the section on Chris Brock and his friend, Marcus, surfing unbelievable. Brocky makes timeless longboards, but is more well known for his surfboards under 6 foot long...tune in to find out more.
The second switch-foot book is 3 years in the making and should be available mid 2009. We have pretty much rounded out the content and now it is a matter of making it look nice, and juggling all the mumbojumbo that goes on in the background.
We have had great feedback on the tee shirts and thankyou people who wrote in and said they liked them. We are going to do some gift packs over Christmas, and we will send out a newsletter in November to let you know about it. Right now, the shop looks pretty beaten up, like it could do with a vacuum and re-fit, but time is tight...the shop is working ok, but the tee shirts look even better on the floor next to the bed.
Well, this is huge for the local scene in country Northern NSW. Big heads up to Glenn at Vitmain records who has organised this festival and we hope people get stoked and come and check it out. There will be hundreds of killer musicians in Mullumbimby over three days and 4 venues from little cafe's to the towns civic centre and bowls club. Sunday 23rd November there are full day passes ($45) for a day full of action, music, workshops and International guests. check out www.mullummusicfestival.com or hit the link on the image to the right here.
'In the 90’s I lived on Noosa Heads, one of the most crowded surf breaks in the world. Large ocean swells developing off the coast of Queensland attract surfers from everywhere - from dawn till dark. Our camouflaged block of flats would turn into a train station. Suddenly, long-lost-friends needed a car park. My kitchen always ran out of milk. The tribal instinct of bad boys as well as the sweet caress of a glowing afternoon surfing with friends, inspired this series of ‘surf’ artworks.' Blair McNamara
I am hugely influenced by Japanese art especially Katsushika Hokusai and have travelled there some yrs ago with Heywood - Childrens books are a major influence along with other artists such as Reg Mombassa, Trent Whitehead, and Chuck Jones (Dr Seuss) and I love Vintage maps and old sea memorabilia. My work in the future will encompass the beauty and the terror that the ocean can bring to our lives - from shipwrecks and shark sightings to sharing a wave with your son and hanging down the beach with ya girl.
Nathan Oldfields much anticipated second feature length surfing film will be showing in Sydney December 13th and we encourage you to check out his website and other works. Nathan's first surfing film was 'lines from a poem' and the name and artworks say it all, it is about the glide, the lifestye, the art and super smooth surfing. to wathc the trailer click here www.vimeo.com/1152531
Recently been recording their second album at Black Box studios in Brisbane. We have ordered the double album soundtrack to Cyrus Suttons film, Under The Sun and are taking preliminary orders until they arrive. The album has one cd from Ubiquitys Shawn lee and one disc from Low Pressure Productions.
Cyrus Sutton has been touring his film around the US a bit, including the New York surf film festival and is set to release it in Australia on dvd, and perhaps tour the East coast a little bit. If you are interested in funky tunes and 16mm film shot by this emmy award winner, who surprisingly is only 25 years old, then stay tuned, drop us an email and get the latest news. We have ordered the cd soundtrack and will have the dvd when it is available and hopefully have a styling christmas pack for people who are into it.....cheers
Mark Pridmore loves his surfboards, and he dropped us a line and said g'day and thought there might be people interested in his bat tails and quad fins....
'I really enjoy doing anything different and I dont do too many typical mainstream designs, well I do some but they are total custom jobs, with every dimension being carefully considered to ensure its spot on...Just love shaping and designing surfboards, after all its functional art ....' Mark Pridmore
The writing is on the wall for police at A-grade surf spots, to control the greed and chaos that is going on. Since we cant slap people around the head anymore, there seems to have be a rise in obnoxious behaviour...surprising? Unlikely. What can we do to curtail the chaos in the water? Most of the old guys i have talked to have said, 'give' and others have said, 'be polite'...this can surely help. We also encourage surfers with experience to pull people up and explain the error of their ways, with force if need be...if you are older and you see someone doing the wrong thing, pull them up...it is the best thing you can do for surfing right now...even if you were not riding the wave, but you saw someone paddle up the face of the wave of a guy getting tubed, and causing a wipeout...it has power if someone else in the lineup voices up, aside from the two conflicting surfers who had the
accident. Surf injuries are dangerous, people die...and soon there will be police on the beach and in the water if we dont ALL do something to help...check this article in the UK...the writing is on the wall.

I am both a surfer and musician, living in the Gold Coast in Australia. I recently subscribed to your newsletter which I have really enjoyed reading. I was wondering if it might be possible to include something in a future issue on my recently released debut album, 'So Alive' of which 10% of all CD sales proceeds goes to the Surfrider Foundation Australia, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the protection of Australia's oceans, waves and beaches. This is a great surf spot down near Newcastle that the powers are trying to take over and stop access for surfers. We encourage every surfer everywhere around the World to try and stop this sort of behaviour, it would be the beginning of the end if they let it happen, so please click on and sign up.
There is an interesting interview with Ryan Heywood at this link. Heywood is an artist, designer and passionate photographer who likes fast food outlets, for their serving trays make good body surfing appendages.
This site is run by Byron Bay local Lawrence Eastland and has all kinds of stuff you might not see elsewhere. Soundfoundation is a great independent web site dedicated to supporting bands and artists to professionally promote and sell their music online.
logs, spoons, knives, forks...you name it, dain will be interested in shaping it. These guys are great and i am sure most of our subscribers have checked out their website!

JOKE~~~joke
The farmer decided to get a new rooster as his old rooster was getting a bit past it. . . . . When he returned with the new rooster and put it in the pen, the new rooster said to the old one 'your time is up you old fart, all these hens are mine now.' The old rooster asked, 'what you are not going to give me just one?' The young rooster was full of himself, and the old rooster said 'look, i may be old but i bet i can race you once around the house and if i win, you have to give me at least one hen.'
The young rooster agreed but gave the old rooster a head start...so, here is this old rooster running around the house with the young rooster chasing after him...the farmer saw this, pulled the gun out and shot the young rooster, and thought to himself, 'that is the third young gay rooster this week! Moral of the story, well, you make up your own mind....
