Autumn is a more comfortable time of year in the garden. Lawn growth is reduced, weeds are less prolific, and of course the cooler weather gives us a real chance to make an impact in the garden. Living in northern NSW / southern QLD, we are fortunate enough to enjoy a climate where we can productively (and comfortably) grow plants all year 'round, not merely in Spring.
This issue, we introduce 'Collector's Corner', showcasing some of our rare, hard-to-find plants suitable for avid gardeners and innovators alike. We also show you how to grow your own veggies, no longer something we can avoid with the rising cost of fresh produce.
If you are tempted to go for a walk or a drive, look out for the beautiful autumn foliage trees you may see around - if you see one you like, take a leaf or two as a sample and bring it to us for identification. Liquidambar trees for example are a great investment around the home, they provide shade in summer, put on a fabulous colour display in autumn, then lose their leaves allowing the warming, winter sun to shine through. Autumn is a great time to plant a shrub or tree, because anything planted now will have a chance to send its roots out and establish, rest over winter and then power away in spring.
