Australia vs. The Rest of the World - The Recession Challenge
Guest article by Richard Katter at THG
It's State of Origin time, and in the spirit of competition we are comparing Australia’s GFC economy to the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and China. We’ll establish how we stack up against these four major economic forces and why.
Immigration - Beautiful one day...
Firstly let’s look at the demand for Australia as a place to live. Australia annihilates most countries in terms of net migration. Australia’s net migration is at 6.23 people per 1,000 of the population exceeding the UK and the US by about 2.88 and 1.44 times respectively. Australia’s migration levels are quite substantial given that the US experiences immigration from their bordering Central American countries and given that the UK, as a member of the EU, has a virtual open boarder policy with other EU member states.
According to the CIA World Factbook, Australia’s total population growth (incorporating this immigration, births and deaths) is in the top three of the world’s developed countries; with Israel and Lichtenstein making up the balance of the top three.
Despite Australia’s high level of immigration it wasn’t too long ago that our economic growth was restricted by a lack of skilled labour. This issue is likely to return once our economy starts to grow again; and our labour market capacity constraints may be exasperated, given our Federal Government’s recent, reactionary reduction in our annual immigration quota.

Events Update
Property & Construction Market Outlook - 22 April 2009
NGP's first networking function for the year saw over 100 guests listening to Josh Kennedy-White, (Laing ORourke) and Leigh Warner, (Jones Lang LaSalle) who shared their thoughts on the property and construction sectors and gave a prospective outlook into 2009 and beyond.
Financing Difficulties in the Current Market - 12 May 2009
Over 90 students and industry professionals came together to talk about financing difficulties in the current market. The panel discussion saw speakers Tim Johnson (CEO, Graystone), Andrew Weeden (PWC) and Alistair Weir (Property Risk, ANZ Bank) answering the hard questions from the floor.
The first question of the night was asked even before all members of the panel could be introduced and the 75 minutes wasn't long enough to get through everything and conversation with our experts and attendees continued long after the conclusion of formalities.
